So I am a little late in posting this week’s update. I would love to say it’s because I have been livin’ it up here and having a total blast with life … but I am not one to lie. Granted I have been getting out and about but the livin’ it up part not so much. My weekends have become boring (not going out and doing anything fun) and sedentary, but during the week I have been seeing the sights. Here is my New Years Resolutions – Week 42 update.
So during the week a coworker and I decided to start, at least for the month of October because she has obligations that start in November, to go out and see the sights of DC after work. Totally cool to have found someone who wants to sightsee also, and I won’t have to do it alone! It’s cool, but this free’s my weekend up to do a whole lot of nothing – and I mean that to say, it allows me to think I don’t have to go out and do anything. At least for October. But I am a planner and already have the next three weekends planned in my head to make sure I get out and do something. My one bedroom apartment is nice sized, but it gets small when you spend so much time in it!
These pics are of the few places we have gone in the last week. We started with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History because she wanted to see the dinosaurs … and we didn’t know until we got there and were wandering around that the dinosaur exhibit was under construction, so no dinosaurs. But it was still cool to walk around and see everything. This week we went to the Air and Space Museum and the American Indian Museum. They were both interesting, but the American Indian Museum was a little disappointing in that it didn’t have all that many artifacts in it. At all. I expected it to be like the Natural History Museum with all its gems and meteorites from hundreds of years ago. AIM didn’t have much of anything. The Air and Space Museum had tons of planes hanging from the ceiling, and when / if my parents ever come to visit this will be the Museum I bring my dad to, he loves plane museums!
But the one memorial I have been wanting to visit since I heard it was opening was the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. The memorial is brand spanking new to DC, it just opened a few weeks ago, the same weekend as my 5k. I had jogged over to it after the 5k, it’s by the Capitol, but the President was there for the dedication so it wasn’t open to the public. Duh me for not checking. But I finally got there, and let me say, it is just as daunting as any of the other war memorials – but this one is even more so since this is memorial that I can relate to. It is created in the era of 09/2011 and the continuing wars and it’s casualties. I also like to think that this memorial is not just for the physically disabled but the emotionally disabled vets also. I think we have all had people in our lives that have been affected mentally and emotionally by what they experienced in the wars they fought in. A memorial that is dedicated to all veterans who have a disability due to the horrors they lived through, that they had to witness watch others go through. This one is definitely a must-see.
Hope you had a great weekend!
